Many teachers are asked to use rubrics or are shown rubrics as an example of “best practices” without having the opportunity to learn about the theoretical foundations rubrics should be built upon. Teachers and students often run into trouble with rubrics because of common problems, such as:
confusing language
overly dense elements
redundant elements
no distinction between formative and summative rubrics
unclear relationship to the assignment or course
insufficient support or feedback

In this session, we will discuss tips for writing clear assignment and assessment prompts and less ambiguous, more understandable rubrics. We will also cover the difference between formative feedback (assignments) and summative assessments and how rubrics should be used differently for different types of student work.
